Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)

Pre-trip and post-trip checks, FMCSA-aligned

Every commercial fleet operator subject to FMCSR §§ 396.11 / 396.13 needs a documented vehicle inspection before and after every trip. Fleet builds it into the driver's flow and stores the signed record with the load.

Pre-trip inspection — 17 standard FMCSA checkpoints (brakes, lighting, tires, coupling devices, emergency equipment, and more)
Post-trip inspection — same checklist, captured before driver clocks out
Defect reporting — mark any item as defective, attach a photo, write a note, and the system flags the truck out-of-service until cleared
Driver e-signature — timestamped, GPS-stamped, retained with load record
Mechanic certification — defects route to the maintenance queue and require a signed clearance before next trip
Audit trail — 14-month retention exceeds FMCSA § 396.11(c)(2) minimum, exportable as PDF for DOT inspection
