Mid-transition is the worst time for some treatments and the best time for others. Fumes can kill a developing cell or an unmated queen; strips that need brood to work do nothing in a broodless colony; and the broodless gap is exactly when oxalic acid reaches every mite. When a hive has an active queen-transition cycle, the treatment selector and the bulk treatment sheet check your product against the cycle's current stage.
- Critical - fume products (formic, oxalic vapor) while a cell is at its fragile stage: the advisory tells you to wait.
- Warning - fume or thymol products while the new queen is unmated: mating flights and acceptance can fail.
- Warning - brood-dependent strips on a currently broodless colony: the treatment is wasted; re-treat after brood returns.
- Opportunity - the broodless window is flagged as the ideal moment for oxalic acid, when no mites can hide under cappings.
